Early Reviews for Living Fully Loved
Early Reviews for Living Fully Loved
Dear Friend,
I hope your year is off to a great start.
I have loved these early weeks of January. It's a wonderful time of reflection, looking back on the highs and lows of last year, then praying, planning, and preparing for this upcoming year.
I just returned with my wife, Krista, from Idaho, where we visited our grandchildren. I saw the most beautiful sunsets I'd ever seen! (Below)
If you're new to my newsletter, I want to welcome you and the many others who have signed up since Christmas. I hope these emails will encourage and inspire you in the coming days.
For all of you who dropped me very kind notes and condolences after I shared the sad news last month of the death of one of my best friends, Bob Murphy. I experienced your comfort and compassion... a bit of sweet community in this newsletter. Thank you!
Bob was our executive director at The Grove Center for the Arts & Media, an arts nonprofit ministry I founded over 20 years ago. With Bob's passing, I am now back on The Grove's board of directors, leading the ministry with our team as we paddle out in this new year.
If you've read Living Fully Loved, you've now learned more about my life with artists, my work cultivating avocados and lemons, and The Grove's artist retreats. (I tell a lot of stories in the book...) I'll be sharing more in the days to come. If you have a love for creativity, the arts, or creatively using your God-given gifts, send me an email to learn more.
Last, I'm a bit shocked (and encouraged) by the early reviews coming in for my new book. As you know, readers' tastes are all over the map. What appeals to one can mean "not-so-much" for another. I'm so grateful my early readers have been inspired by Living Fully Loved.
Encouraging and inspiring you is why I write.
Thank you.
Keep cultivating your creativity and God-given gifts,
Joey

Living Fully Loved-Excerpt Chapter 6 Hide-and-Seek

When I was a boy, my family lived on a wide street that was nestled perpendicular to two long, busy streets. Our street was the length of two football fields and traffic was low, so it was here where my five sisters, one brother, and our friends played street games after school until dark or whenever my mom called us in for dinner, whichever came first.
We had a long list of games to choose, fight over, and keep us busy. In our backyard, we played Tag, Kickball, Dodgeball, and Four Square. In the front yard, we played Red Light-Green Light, Sardines, Capture the Flag, and my favorite, Hide-N-Seek. Jump rope was for my sisters.
With homes lining both sides of the street, each property had deep front yards filled with towering trees, thick shrubs, bushes easy to get lost in, and tall hedges like the one bordering our home that I set ablaze when my parents were gone for the weekend. Two fire engines showed up, but that’s a story for another day.
With so many places to hide, our street was awesome for playing Hide and Seek. Whoever was “It” had a truly terrible time finding the dozen or so kids taking cover in so many places. The surrounding foliage rivaled a South American jungle, so sneaking your way back to home base provided plenty of opportunities to get free. Our simple goal was to reach home base and become free before getting caught and sent to jail. Hide-N-Seek jail ruined every game!
After playing round after round of Hide-N-Seek, little did we know that our innocent childhood game mirrored the spiritual state of the world around us and within us.
